Incumbent Mayor John Marks Edges Out Stewart with 51 Percent of the Vote

TALLAHASSEE, Fla. – Tallahassee mayoral challenger Steve Stewart released the following statement regarding the outcome of the primary election.

“While I am disappointed in the election outcome, I do hope that my run for office served to catalyze increased civic engagement among everyday citizens so that our elected officials may be held more accountable for their actions going forward. I want to thank all of the supporters who poured their heart and soul into my campaign. I cannot begin to describe what that has meant to me and my family.”

Stewart announced his candidacy in October 2009 with the promise of strengthening the economy, lowering utility rates and creating a more open and responsive city government. In 2008, the small business owner and 14-year consumer advocate founded TallahasseeReports.com, where he broke the deferred compensation story and kept citizens informed about local issues. Early on in his candidacy, he launched TalGovSpending.com to provide taxpayers with free access to an online database of city expenditures. He also advocated for a citizens utility board, which has since been reactivated.

As you may know by now, Mayor John Marks won the mayoral election with 51% of the vote.

Dear Supporters,

We’ve accomplished two of our three goals thus far. For one, we have made this campaign about the issues. Secondly, we have not resorted to political mudslinging or personal attacks. And now, there’s only one thing left to do.

Tomorrow, Tuesday, August 24th, YOU will decide who leads this city for the next four years.

Your generous sacrifices of time and resources have positioned us to win this race, but to make it happen, you must vote. And every vote counts.

Call your friends, encourage your neighbors, and carpool to the polls with your coworkers. Together, we will transform this city into a more prosperous community, where government is accessible and accountable to all citizens.

For information on where to vote click here.

I invite you to join us tomorrow at Po’ Boys Downtown as we celebrate our accomplishments and await the election results, which should begin rolling in shortly after the polls close at 7 p.m. Some of us will arrive at 5:30 p.m., but feel free to stop by any time after work or throughout the evening.

Thank you all for your continued support. You have already made a big difference, and this is only the beginning.

Steve

Tallahassee, Fla. – Mayoral challenger Steve Stewart raised nearly double that of incumbent Mayor John Marks in the final fundraising period of the primary election, which consisted of the first three weeks in August. During that time, Stewart raised $30,845 in monetary contributions, and Marks collected $17,736.

“I could not be more humbled by the outpouring of support during these last three weeks,” said Stewart. “Clearly, Tallahassee is poised for change.”

Stewart’s candidacy has been endorsed by the Fraternal Order of Police, the Tallahassee Board of Realtors, Leon County Commissioner Bill Proctor, retired Leon County Sheriff Eddie Boone, former Tallahassee Mayor Penny Herman and prominent local attorney Chuck Hobbs. Stewart has also won straw polls conducted by Capital Tiger Bay Club, Northeast Business Association, Capital Medical Society and Tallahassee Kiwanis Club.

Stewart announced his candidacy in October 2009 with the promise of strengthening the economy, lowering utility rates and creating a more open and responsive city government.
With the fundraising deadline behind us and just four days to go until Election Day, we’re not done yet.

Dear Supporters,

With the fundraising deadline behind us and just four days to go until Election Day, we’re not done yet.

Tomorrow, Saturday, August 21st, please join us from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. for the “Believe in Steve” Community Rally. Meet us at the Wharf Express at 1108 South Magnolia Drive, just south of Apalachee Parkway. We’ll enjoy music and refreshments while waving campaign signs at various nearby intersections.

Stop by for an hour, or stay the entire time. Whatever you do, get there early, as the first 80 people will receive free Steve Stewart t-shirts.

I know it’s hot. I know it’s muggy. But nothing can compare to the camaraderie you will find among fellow supporters and the pride you will feel in knowing that you played a role in shaping the future of our city.

With that, I want to thank our tremendous volunteers for carrying us to this point. They’ve walked to more than 12,000 homes, organized fundraisers and meet-and-greets, phoned friends and neighbors, and built big campaign signs and hammered them into the ground. We would not be where we are without all they’ve done.

Thanks, and see you Saturday!

Steve

Tallahassee, Fla. — Tallahassee mayoral candidate Steve Stewart won two straw polls yesterday, one held by the Tallahassee Kiwanis Club, and the other by Capital Medical Society.

“I want to thank both of these organizations for hosting candidate forums yesterday and providing their members with an opportunity to learn about the issues and challenges facing our community,” said Stewart. “The future of our city depends on their vote.”

Earlier this year, Stewart also won straw polls conducted by the Capital Tiger Bay Club and the Northeast Business Association.

Stewart announced his candidacy in October 2009 with the promise of strengthening the economy, lowering utility rates and creating a more open and responsive city government.
